On December 25th, 2025, Pudgy Pups had the honour of spending Christmas Day at Sunrise Senior Living, donating our time and bringing rescue puppies into the community to share comfort, connection, and a little extra holiday magic.

This visit wasn’t part of a paid program or ongoing contract — it was something we chose to do simply because we believe in giving back. For us, Christmas is about community, compassion, and showing up where joy is needed most. Bringing puppies to Sunrise felt like the perfect way to do that.

What Is Puppy Therapy?

Puppy therapy (also called animal-assisted therapy) involves structured interactions between people and specially selected, well-socialized dogs or puppies to support emotional, mental, and even physical wellbeing.

Unlike traditional therapy, puppy therapy focuses on simple, natural moments:

  • Gentle cuddles

  • Soft petting

  • Eye contact and companionship

  • Playful interaction

These small experiences create powerful emotional responses that can lower stress and increase feelings of happiness and comfort.

A Christmas Day Puppy Therapy Visit

On Christmas Day, our team arrived with a group of healthy, vaccinated rescue puppies and set up a calm, supervised space where residents could sit, cuddle, pet, and spend time with the puppies at their own pace.

The room quickly filled with smiles, quiet moments, laughter, and stories about past pets and cherished memories. Some residents held puppies in their laps, others watched them nap or play, and many simply enjoyed being close to them.

It was a gentle, meaningful way to spend part of the holiday — focused on connection rather than spectacle.

Why Puppy Therapy Is Especially Beneficial for Seniors

As people age, they can experience increased feelings of loneliness, isolation, or anxiety. Puppy therapy offers gentle, non-judgmental companionship that can make a big difference.

Some of the key benefits for seniors include:

Reduced Loneliness and Isolation

Interacting with puppies provides comfort and companionship, helping residents feel less alone and more connected.

Improved Mood and Emotional Wellbeing

Spending time with animals has been shown to increase serotonin and dopamine — the “feel good” chemicals in the brain.

Lower Stress and Anxiety

Petting a puppy can help lower cortisol (the stress hormone), creating a calming effect.

Gentle Stimulation and Engagement

Puppy visits encourage residents to engage socially, talk with others, and participate in an activity they look forward to.

Sense of Purpose

Caring for and interacting with puppies can create feelings of usefulness, nurturing, and responsibility.

How Puppy Therapy Benefits the Puppies Too

Puppy therapy is not just beneficial for humans — it also supports the puppies’ development.

Our puppies come from rescue situations and benefit from:

  • Gentle socialization

  • Exposure to new environments

  • Learning calm handling

  • Positive human interaction

These experiences help prepare puppies for adoption and create more confident, well-adjusted dogs.
